DC Fashion Week

By all accounts Ean Williams (Executive Producer & Director) of DC Fashion Week and his team put on a great show last month. DC Fashion week was a series of great events showcasing local fashion industry talent including designers and models. Lamonte Gwynne of Lamonte G. Photography was on hand to capture the energy of the week by photographing 2 great events for UPL. The events included the Corjor International show at The Park at Fourteenth which featured a special performance by Jeremih of “Birthday Sex” fame, a terrific Bridal Show at the Textile Museum in D.C featuring designers Alvin Thompson, Leighel Desiree, Ester Huffman and Elizabeth St. John,

Next year we plan to have a great presence at the events and to report in much more detail. For now take a look at what DC had to offer. Kudos to Ean Williams and his team, all the designers and of course the models, make-up artists, hair and wardrobe stylists and support staff for another successful series of events.

Sabit NYC 2011 Spring/Summer Collection

Inspired by the Japanese Street-wear culture "Amecaji" SABIT NYC presented the 2011 SPRING/SUMMER Collection. "SABIT" meaning the "Hook" or the best part of the song continues to "Hook" the fashionable, trendsetter on both a local and international scale. The show took place at Touch West 52nd Street (Bet. 8th & Broadway). The invite said "6:00pm-8pm (VIP Cocktail Reception) OPEN BAR -Invite ONLY, showtime was supposed to be 8:00pm SHARP!!! and EARLY ARRIVAL RECOMMENDED!

Well they definitely were right about early arrival as the line was crazy to get into to the show. Special shout to Ra-Fael Blanco (Two R's Media) for making sure I didn't have an issue with the line. The show started a bit late, but in all fairness it wasn't the first show I attended this week to start behind schedule.

Now, about the show itself. The invite for the show read "Shoichi Amemiya affectionatlely known as "Uncle Sho" has garnered a following that reflects his sheer genius and devotion to fashion excellence, and the integrity of "brand" alike." The look is very urban, very casual and sported a rather large "S" on most of the jackets and cardigans. A mature man like myself is clearly not the target audience as we tend to shy away from overly large logos and lot of writing on our apparel. That being said I found the pieces to well constructed, the color palette sensual without being overbearing and likely to be very pleasing to it's target audience (young men who are fans of urban American style).

Congrats to Shoichi for bringing his vision to life and special shout out to Shalik Ian Harford for continuing to provide people of color with valuable exposure and opportunities to live their dreams of working in fashion as models, stylists, etc. Special shout out to my friends, models Seandon and Levante who both walked in the show.

The Jose Duran - Spring/Summer 2011 show was beautiful

Saturday evening September 11 I caught the Jose Duran Spring/Summer 2011 show at the Samsung Experience in the Time Warner Center. The show was breathtaking, elegant and sexy. If the sales of this line aren't through the roof then someone on the business end aint doing their job. Kudos on a wonderful show and collection and here's to an even brighter future.

In addition to the great show, I must say the audience was very sexy and stylish as well and included well known personalities and professionals like Memsor Karamake, June Ambrose, Derrick Adams, Spry Lee Scott and Harriett Cole.

Check out a few images from the show. The entire gallery will be posted later today on facebook. To view it you must add me on facebook.com and twitter.com.

Fashion's Night Out was "fun fun fun"

What a blast! Fashion fashion fashion everywhere. Registers ringing, music pumpin', food, drink and lots of beautiful people. Fashion's Night Out 2010 in NYC was amazing, hectic and by all accounts a success! In my personal travels I partied at Nicole Miller, strolled thru Soho checking out Ralph Lauren, Nicole Miller and more! Then we walked over to Patricia Fields to party, shop and mingle and then after a quick change and brief break headed over to the meatpacking district for a hot party at the Maritime Hotel! Wow..what a night.

As usual check below for a few pics from the evening. You can see a complete gallery of images by adding me on Facebook or following me on Twitter.

Later today we check out Cacy Fornegie's JADED art opening at Chi Chiz Bar in the Village and then it's Jose Duran at The Time Warner Center.

No rest for the fashion weary. Time to make more moves.

If you know someone in the photos below and need to correct or provide a name either comment here or shoot an email to me at Uptownsun@aol.com

Fashion week has begun

Fashion week has begun. Anyone who reads this blog knows that we spend as much time focusing on regular everyday people and the behind the scenes folks who make things happen as much as we do on celebrity and the glitterati. In that spirit a large number of images over the next few days will focus on a diverse group of fashionistas, fashion professonals and regular folks who are attending shows, hosting events or quite simply attending to their own personal style.

Check out a few images from Lincoln Center and check in for more photos, stories about Fashion's Night Out and more! Add me on facebook to see a full gallery of images.

Fashion's Night Out: TONIGHT..I'LL BE THERE..WILL YOU?

TONIGHT IS A MAJOR EVENT IN FASHION! Check the details below and get out, go shopping and have some fun too.

In the United States, American Vogue has joined with NYC & Company, the City of New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America to enliven again the consumer spirit that churns the economy and boosts the local industry of America’s fashion capital, New York City. Next only to finance, fashion is the second-largest sector of industry in New York City—the headquarters of more than 800 fashion companies employing 175,000 people and generating $10 billion in total wages. At City Hall’s May 20 press conference to announce Fashion’s Night Out, Vera Wang said, "To put it bluntly, if people don’t shop, people lose their jobs."

The first evening of New York Fashion Week, Fashion's Night Out will encompass festivities galore— from inventive window displays to model and celebrity appearances. Champagne may flow; hors d'oeuvres may be passed. Rumors of musical performances, downtown barbecues, shoe capsules, limited-edition rings, and sweepstakes abound. Apparently there will be makeovers, brow bars, and haircut stations at sundry spots, too.

Free Fashion’s Night Out Shuttle Bus

During Fashion’s Night Out, there will be free shuttle buses running in Manhattan 6–11pm. These special double-decker buses have been generously provided by Gray Line New York and Payless ShoeSource as the official ride of Fashion’s Night Out.

There will be uptown and downtown bus loops provided. Both bus loops will make their first two stops on Sixth Avenue between 35th and 36th Streets, and across from the Payless ShoeSource store at Fifth Avenue and 39th Street. Riders can transfer from an uptown bus to a downtown bus, and vice versa, at either of these locations. After each bus completes its loop, it will return to the starting point and continue the route again.

Below is a list of the downtown and uptown stops that each bus loop will be making. Just hop on and hop off for free at any stop. Look for the Gray Line New York buses with Fashion’s Night Out signage on the front.

Marc Jacobs has decided it's time for fashion to be fun again and in a very 80's inspired sorta way. I see lots of colors, shoulder pads, panchos and such. I don't pretend to know what to think, I just share this stuff. What do you think ladies?

New Feature coming soon- Personal Pop Style

dancer_thumb.jpg

I am just as interested in what you're doing as I am in sharing my work and thoughts on the world. So in the next few weeks I'll be introducing some new sections to the blog that involve participation from you.

The first of these is Personal Pop Style. So starting today keep an eye open for yours truly or other Urban Pop Life photographers roaming the streets in search of cool people with personal style. In these hard finacial times I am not focused on labels, just style. If you're not in a city that I'm in that's ok, you can send me your random shots of you in that great outfit that everyone needs to see ,or that beautiful girl or boy you saw on the street who demonstrated simply great personal style. Again...I'm not so much focused on labels or stereotypical beauty as much as I am interested in a confident, stylish and classy representation of self.

Start looking out for me or sending the images in today and if the image you send in is not of you, make sure you get permission to use the persons image and send a statement of that fact along with the photo. Please include your name and contact information like your facebook or myspace page URL (not required).

Marc Jacobs and Stephen Sprouse for Louis

301047h.jpg

Who cares about dismal sales for December and profits possibly taking a hit, Louis Vuitton and designer Marc Jacobs have launched of a limited-edition capsule collection of accessories and apparel inspired by artist Stephen Sprouse.

The collection is timed to coincide with a new book on the late artist by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha and a retrospective at New York’s Deitch Gallery.

Vuitton executives acknowledged that the luxury goods landscape has changed in recent months, but expressed confidence that the $1180 Day-Glo graffiti Speedy 30 bags and $755 neon slingbacks would attract customers. “I think we’ll be lucky if we have any stock left in the next month and a half,” Daniel Lalonde, president and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton North America, says. A spokeswoman for Louis Vuitton would not say how many of each item would be produced for the Sprouse collection.

“You’re either going to love it or you’re going to hate it. I’m fine with either reaction,” Mr. Jacobs said of the new collection.

As for the impact of the global economic crisis on his work for next season, Mr. Jacobs said only this: “I’m a thoughtful person, so I take in everything that’s going on in my own world and the world around me.” — contains some information from a story by Elva Ramirez (Heard on the Runway)

Recession vs. Fashion: Drawing the line

dior-homme-lumiere-du-nord-061608-1.png

So we have this conundrum that fashionistas and the industry that employs them must face: How do you reconcile the idea of pushing high fashion and haute couture in the present economic and philosophical environment?

Not only are we clearly in a recession, but the very nature of capitalism, consumerism and greed are all topics for heated debate and conversation. As human beings (and Americans) we most certainly appreciate and desire nice things. In and of itself this is not an evil thing. Our economy is driven by the exchange of goods and services for cash so unless someone comes up with some new system over night we'll need to repair what we've got. However, who's to say how much is enough? How much is too much? Where does necessity end and opulence begin? Where is the line and should it ever be crossed?

I hate to drop this on you, but I DON'T HAVE THE ANSWER. I have always been a practical guy and satisfied with enough to take care of myself and my family. I may never understand the desire or need for a $10,000 wrist watch or a $100,000 car, but I also don't feel the need to tell someone else what works for them either. I do wonder about the message we send to each other and our children in the choices we make and the images we create. However, as an artist I do appreciate beautiful things and images of beautiful things. Organic and natural or man made and mass produced; beautiful is beautiful.

Dior Homme has come out with the Lumiere du Nord collection of accessories for fall/winter 2008/2009. The collection consists of 2 patent calfskin shoes, a boot and high-top sneaker. There are also four men’s bags including a messenger, shopper, backpack and a weekend bag. In addition to the patent calfskin all accessories in the Lumiere du Nord collection feature silver finishes.

Peep these and enjoy. While you contemplate the questions I asked. I'd love to hear back from you.

Meet Brandon Claybon

BleuberryBrandon3_2.jpg

Introducing Brandon Claybon. He's a model from Memphis, TN. He is featured as a Bleuberry on the Bleu Magazine website (http://www.thebleumag.com). I shot these images for Bleu this summer. Keep an eye open for Brandon. He's an old soul in a young man, he's a hard working, focused, polite and driven dude. He's got a great commercial look and I see the potential for a bright future. What do you think?

Enjoy.

Eternal Bachelor

eb42.jpg

It was a busy summer for me. One of the things I did is to shoot the launch campaign for a designer tee shirt line called Eternal Bachelor. The shirts are quality and the shoot was a lot of fun.

Thanks to my assistants Ta'ri B and Calvin for all their help. Congrats to the creator of the line Fohat Aird on a job well done and thanks for thinking of me to shoot the images. Special shout to Franz for the great catering and Dakota who styled the shoot.

The website was designed by Adam Benjamin Irby for OHDWD.com.
