They used to call him Tonex, but as for now...prepare 2 B Slade

Picture 1.png

From controversial gospel music sensation to coming out and now this...BSlade (formerly Tonex) has released a mixtape and video heavily influenced by 70's disco and club hits. The single Get Over You is clearly an homage to Sylvester and all the disco divas of the 70's and to good soul music. Check out the video, and then check out the website and go get your free download of the mixtape A Brilliant Catastrophy. Oh did I mention he actually recorded a cover of the Sylvester classic (You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real? Check it all out and send in your comments.

I Like the Sound of This Bar! (An UPL Moment)

2AM Club.jpg

Here’s what I like to refer to as an UPL Music Moment. It’s brand new, something different for the musical palate and worth a listen.

The band is named 2AM Club after the popular L.A. bar and this is their new single, “Worry About You,” I don’t at all mind listening to. What do you think?

Urban Pop Life Profile: Introducing Britni Elise

212295header2.jpg

In yet another Urban Pop LIfe exclusive, check out this hot new rising star Britni Elise. Her single Hello is blowing up on radio stations across the country and available on itunes. Stay tuned for more from Britni in the near future, but for now peep the video, listen to the track and let me know what you think.

Britni Elise

Britni Elise Is a singer and songwriter and definitely the uprising star of 2010. Since twelve, she has made it her destiny to become the new Pop ICON of the 21st century. Singing melodies with her father at the age of three was the beginning of her many steps toward success. At eight she performed in the Christian play "The Lord will Make A Way" in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2001, Britni Elise put her first trio group together; "First Choice" writing and producing eleven of the thirteen songs on the gospel group's debut CD. They performed at various venues in the Cleveland area but split up in mid 2004. Britni Elise continued writing and less than one year later put together an R&B trio called Chosen Fate. She co-wrote and produced five songs for the trio and they also performed at various venues in and around the Cleveland area. Unfortunately Chosen Fate split in early 2007.

Undaunted, Britni Elise began her pursuit as a solo artist. Under the guidance of industry veteran, PJ Jones, Britni Elise spent the summer of 2008 in Atlanta, GA. writing; recording with Charles Farrar (Vyrus) and developing in the infamous Artist Development Center whose success stories include New Edition, Ciara, Usher, and LeToya Luckett. Britni Elise credits the Artist Development Center as the reason for her growing success. She quotes, “I could not have accomplished so much vocally and in my performance if it were not for the grind and hard work at the center. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything in the world”

In 2008, Britni Elise signed with K-Lo Entertainment as its first artist under the direction of famed (Major League) baseball player, Kenny Lofton. Since signing with K-Lo Entertainment, Britni Elise has recorded with the illustrious Harvey Mason of Harvey Mason Media whose discography includes the Dream Girls Complete Movie Soundtrack, More Than A Game Movie, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Tyrese, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears & Whitney Houston.

Britni Elise has been touring all summer opening for Trey Songs, Ginuwine, Monica, Letoya and the first week of the 2009 Russ Buss Tour featuring acts like Mario and the New Boyz!

In February 2010, Britni Elise will be sharing the spotlight with Ginuwine and K-Jon on the Charlie Wilson tour in her hometown, of Cleveland, Ohio. Britni Elise has also signed with the Docherty Talent Agency for modeling, commercials and print work.

Being in love and having that someone that “completes” you, describes her first single on iTunes, “Satisfied” co-written with Charles Farrar (Vyrus). “Satisfied” gained national and international radio exposure (5k spins) and her video directed by Dabling Harward (Spin Flight Studio Productions) was accepted and added to BETJ, VH1 SOUL, MTV, Music on Demand and a host of local video outlets. Her fan base has increased tenfold with the 2009 release of her remix to “Papers” (Usher) and “Turnt Up” (Roscoe Dash) and both continue to receive national airplay. In 1/10, Britni Elise released her first Mix Tape; Mick Boogie presents Britni Elise B.E. Satisfied.

Currently, Britni Elise is recording with Harvey Mason and her second single “Hello” is receiving applause with a standing ovation from around the country.

Urban Pop Life Video World Premiere: Kelis Acapella

Acapella

I was walking, was living
My melody was acapella
There’s a beat I was missing
No tune, or a scale, I could play
-
The sound in the distance
No orchestra playing together
Like a boat out to sea,
The silence was too deafening!
-
So come and revive me
I can’t feel my heartbeat
Just me surviving alone
-
(Chorus)
Before you,
My whole life was acapella!
Now a symphony’s
The only song to sing
Before you,
My whole life was acapella!
Now a symphony’s
The only song to sing
-
Everything was the same
One color was just like the others
An assembly routine
My memories were all black and white
Till I stopped over-thinking
Decided to draw back the curtains
And I cleared all the cobwebs
And began to let in the light
-
So come and revive me
I can’t feel my heartbeat
Just me surviving alone
-
(Chorus)
Before you,
My whole life was acapella!
Now a symphony’s
The only song to sing
Before you,
My whole life was acapella!
Now a symphony’s
The only song to sing
-
(Bridge – 3X)
You are the drum in my heart beat
Bass and guitar lead
Stuck on the notes you play
My heart that you play on
Grab like a crayon
I can’t walk away
-
(Chorus – 2X)
Before you,
My whole life was acapella!
Now a symphony’s
The only song to sing
Before you,
My whole life was acapella!
Now a symphony’s
The only song to sing

Music video: Blondie

I'm feeling a lil nostagic on this rainy fall day in NYC. So as I so often do I am listening to 80's music as I get some work done. Check out these great video moments from music legends Blondie fronted by music and style icon Deborah Harry. Urban Pop is at the core of what Blondie was and remains to this day. They were edgy, authentic, real, equal parts sub-culture and pop-culture, irreverent and yet deadly serious in their pursuit of artistically authentic pop and punk pleasure.

Music video: Drake

Every now and then a rapper does something so hot or creative to me that I feel compelled to share it. I love the mixtape by Drake. His mixtape the first hip hop since Kanye West that has captured my attention and I love it! This is the video for "Successful" which is damn near my anthem right now. Hip Hop heads check it out and enjoy. To my non-hip hop heads don't worry I am not turning the blog into Rap City. The focus is still on visual art, sub-culture and things a lil left of center, but pop culture is still an important element on UrbanPopLife and this Drake phenomenon is a little of everything: it's artistic, it was until recently an undergorund thing and now is part of pop culture. In other words he really kind embodies Urban Pop.

Pet Shop Boys Return

I was never really a big fan, but as an adult I have a whole new appreciation for these trend setting melody makers. Their new CD is selling well in Europe and getting great reviews here in advance of its April 21st release. There are also plans for a fall US tour. The Pet Shop Boys are quite literally legendary artists. They are listed as one of the most influential acts of the MTV era behind Madonna, Prince and MIchael Jackson. They are pop stars, respected writers and gay icons. They've written songs that will forever live as iconic moments in later 20th century pop culture and from all accounts they're actually real nice guys.

Check out the vieo for their new single.

BoA

beat-of-angel-boa.jpeg

Boa Kwon (born November 5, 1986), commonly known by her stage name BoA, which stands for Beat of Angel, is a Korean singer, active in both South Korea and Japan. Born and raised in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, BoA was discovered by SM Entertainment talent agents when she accompanied her older brother to a talent search. In 2000, after two years of training, she released ID; Peace B, her debut Korean album, under SM Entertainment. Two years later, she released her debut Japanese album, Listen to My Heart, under the Avex label. On October 14, 2008, under SM Entertainment USA, a subdivision of SM Entertainment, BoA debuted in the United States with the single "Eat You Up" and released her debut English-language album, BoA on March 17, 2009.

Influenced by hip hop and R&B singers as Nelly and Janet Jackson, many of BoA's songs fall into those genres. The writing and composition of her songs are handled mostly by her staff, for which BoA has drawn some criticism. However, BoA began composing on her own with her Japanese debut album Listen to My Heart, in which she co-wrote and composed the song "Nothing's Gonna Change".

BoA's multilingual skills (she speaks Japanese and conversational English along with her native Korean and has recorded songs in Mandarin Chinese) have contributed to her commercial success in South Korea and Japan and her popularity throughout Asia. She is one of only two non-Japanese Asians who have had million-selling albums in Japan and is one of only two artists to have first six consecutive number-one studio albums on the Oricon charts.

On September 2, 2008, SM Entertainment announced that BoA would make her American debut under a new subsidiary label, SM Entertainment USA. A press conference was held on September 10, 2008 at the Seoul Imperial Palace Hotel to clarify the details of her American debut. BoA's debut American single "Eat You Up" was released online on October 21, 2008; it reached the top positions on the online music charts in the United States. The physical single was to be released in stores on November 11, 2008, but SM instead released a promotional CD containing dance remixes of "Eat You Up". "Eat You Up" became a number-one Breakout on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. The remix of "Eat You Up" featuring rapper Flo Rida was slated for release in late November and leak onto the internet in December. BoA performed "Eat You Up" as well as other songs at YouTube's Tokyo Live concert, and performed in New York City on December 3, 2008, as well as the Jingle Ball at the Anaheim Honda Center on December 6, 2008. She also performed the song "Look Who's Talking" at the event.

BoA released a triple-A-side single on February 18, 2009, "Eien/Universe/Believe in Love". Also, her second compilation album, Best & USA was released on March 18. The album will be released in a two-disc or one-disc edition. The former will contain one disc with Japanese songs and one with her debut American album; the latter contains fourteen Japanese songs and two songs from her American debut album. BoA's self-titled English album was released on March 17.

J-HARRIS

J-Harris is a NYC based artist who "POP's" with us everyday. One of the most important tenants in his creativity is MCM. Music made with a Conscious Message.

Music made with a Conscious Message (MCM) is a new music genre defined by Joseph H. Fleming aka J-Harris. It is music that always embodies a message of hope, love, self-empowerment, or encouragement. It is an emerging genre that incorporates the best of R& B, Spoken Word, Hip Hop, Contemporary Christian and Pop/Urban Music. It is music by artists who understand that music is one of the world’s best and most effective vehicles for conveying messages and influencing the moods, minds, and hearts of people across all ethnic, religious, and socio- economic lines.

The MCM Movement is being led by artists and others who are conscious about what message is promoted through music, and who want to encourage others to embrace that consciousness. The Movement understands that “music is the weapon of the future.”

World Premiere video - LeToya Luckett

Platinum Recording Artist LeToya Luckett Debuts New Video
"Not Anymore"
New York, NY March 11, 2009 - After reaching platinum with her first album LeToya has finished recording the much anticipated and awaited sophomore album titled "Lady Love". LeToya recently graced us with a new fresh and vibrant look in the premier of her new video "Not Anymore", the leading single from the album.

Directed by Bryan Barber, and set in the 1960's the video gives fans a delightful insight of LeToya's acting skills as her character is forced to throw off a cheating man played by actor Lance Gross, from her tour bus and continues with her successful career letting him know, she is "Not Having It Anymore"!

"LeToya is back!" says long time friend and celebrity make-up artist Aj Crimson "looking more beautiful than ever and with a new swag. This Album LeToya is cheering on and advocating women's independence without bashing".

"It's more of a short film rather than a simple music video" says Barber who has gained prominent stature within the music video industry for his ability to break out of the cliches that have dogged the music video business.

Breaking out and exploring new ideas and showing "another" side of herself is exactly what LeToya did in this video. "I love the video, its very different from my other videos" says the beautiful singer. "It has a great story line. Brian Barber is an amazing director to work with. Furthermore I strongly believe that anyone who is going through hard times weather its relationship or just life in general can relate to this song, just like myself, and sometimes we just have to take a step back and say "Not Anymore"!

The leading single was written by singer and song writer Ne-Yo who has written many number one hits. The "Lady Love" album is set to release May 19, 2009.

For further information, to watch the full video, and for latest news about the "Lady Love" album, LeToya Luckett and her upcoming projects please visit www.letoyaonline.com.

Letoya is repped by The Dejene Agency. The Dejene Agency is a full service PR, Events, and Entertainment agency.

Britney Spears - If You Seek Amy

The song is barely-a-double-entendre track, the vocals are catchy and of course sung in the " I aint really a strong vocalist" style that some of us have come to appreciate. I've been waitin and curious to see what kind of video she'd do for this joint and it's done. The official video for Britney's If You Seek Amy is out and I dig it. Yeah it could be stronger, yeah the dancing leaves a lot to be desired and yeah you have to be a little slow not to see past the barely-a-double-entendre lyrics, but it's still a taste of pop pleasure.

Urban Pop Profile - Shalamar

I grew up in LA. Back in the day there were still subtle differences between the coasts. There have always been superstars, but music was still somewhat regional. There were acts that were huge in LA and modestly successful on the east coast and vice versa. Of course over time the really good acts gained huge followings everywhere after creating a huge following at home first.

In LA we all helped acts like The Whispers, Lakeside, Teena Marie and Shalamar blow up and become national stars. Shalamar was one of my favorite R&B groups in the 80's. That was a time period when I was really into Prince, Michael Jackson and British New Wave music, but there were still R&B acts that I loved. Shalamar was among them. They provided the soundtrack to my prom night with their hit "A Night To Remember and scored major hits with songs like Dead Giveaway, For The Lover in You, Second Time Around and Take That to The Bank.

Check out these flashback videos and televison performances featuring the most popular incarnation of the group Jody Watley, Howard Hewitt and Jeffrey Daniel.

Video Flashback - Jermaine Stewart

This brotha did his thing back inthe day. He started as a dancer on Soul Train with the likes of Jody Watley and Jerffrey Daniels, then he had a huge hit with this single. I ended up meeting him years later and he was a very nice dude. I say was because unfortunately he was one of the many great talents we lost to AIDS in the 80's and early 90's. Enjoy this flashback video from Jermaine Stewart.

Well it appears I am not the only one who got into to her music as she has been nominated for multiple Grammy's including Best New Artist. Take a few minutes and peep some of the videos below so that you can see why she has sold tons of CD's and received multiple nominations. Video Flashback - Missing Persons

I've been running into all these high school friends on Facebook lately and it's kinda cool. If you combine that with my love of 80's music it's a recipe for a flashback phase and I feel one coming on strong. While updating my blog this morning I was listening to my 80's playlist and this song and group jumped out at me.

Missing Persons had a huge hit with this joint and wild video to go with it. Adults 35 - 45 before you look at some kid and go off about them walking around with sagging jeans on remember what we thought was cool...LOL.

Enjoy.

Prince proteges

Prince is clearly a musical icon and will be remembered for all time. However, there is another great contribution that he made that I wanna remind you of and share...his so called proteges. A man as talented as Prince had too many ideas for his mind, body and creative soul to hold. As a result he often combined forces with other talented musicians to create side projects and/or to produce albums of great (and sometimes not so great) music under other names and for other artists. In addition to projects he was directly involved in, Prince opened the doors for a whole slew of artists from Minneapolis to emerge unto the music scene and do their thing. Next week I'm going to share videos and memories of several of these artists. Here's a taste of what's to come.

Britney Spears - Circus

If you know me, then you know I am oddly democratic in my entertainment tastes. Sometimes it seems lkek I hate everything, then I am in love with the cheesiest stuff ever!!!! Bottom line is I work and play hard, but try not to take anything including myself too seriously, though this is not always an easy thing to do. Anyway, all this preamble exists so I can say IT'S HERE PEOPLE..THE NEW BRITNEY VIDEO FOR THE TITLE TRACK FROM HER NEW CD CIRCUS. ENJOY.

STAND TOGETHER Independent Artist Lift Their Voices and Sing - "It's Time To Move On!"

I received an from an associate of my named Dee aka Deepa Soul. She's a talented sista who's a singer-songwriter and who was introduced to me by Lee Soulja who is another beautiful soul (more about him at a lata date). Deepa generously told me how much she loves the blog and offered her support. Then she told me about a project she is working on and in a subsequent email sent me a link so that I could hear the song, watch the video, read the press relase and decide whether or not to support it. WELL I AM SUPPORTING THE EFFORT 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Below you will find the press release for the project, a link to the website and the world premiere video. Everyone is understandbly excited about the election as am I, but

In this current climate of political uncertainty, economic instability, and global unrest, an over boding sense of hopelessness and pain pervades the atmosphere. Pundits, preachers, and people alike all look desperately for answers, a revelation or the second coming. As we sit divided, pondering our precarious fate Deepa Soul offers a simple solution, - "STAND TOGETHER"!

Boasting an impressive cast of Independent Recording Artist representing various ethnicities, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age and political affiliations, "STAND TOGETHER" is a riveting recording and a propitious anthem of hope!

Penned in 2004 in collaboration with Dean Bohana, singer/songwriter Deepa Soul was inspired to record and release this track recognizing it's relevance in this time of crisis. "I called on 30 of my friends and fellow indie recording artist to sing on the song and the response was instantaneous! The most amazing part of this whole experience, was walking in that room to literally see the American Melting Pot right in front of my face! Everybody was talking, laughing and singing together. That in and of itself was an inspiration to me" Deepa recalls. The result is a compelling, uplifting and moving song that engenders a sense of unity and encourages action for change. "Put your hands together....It's time to move on", this recurring line serves as a simple reminder that 'the sum of a whole is greater than it's individual parts.'

This inspirational song is a nostalgic walk down memory's lane to the "We Are The World" collaboration of 1985. Quoting musical icons of the past, the lyrics recite Curtis Mayfield's prediction "If There's A Hell Below We're All Gonna Go,"poses Marvin Gaye's question "What's Going On" and implores us to "live as one" as John Lennon surmises "it's easy if we try."

"Stand Together" is the theme song for SOLUTIONEVOLUTION, a movement to end poverty in America www.solutionevolution.org created by Deepa and her partners husband and wife team Reza Khan and Pamela Schwilk. 50% of the digital download of the song will be donated to two non-profit organizations, New Orleans Labor of Love www.nolaboroflove.org and the 9/11 Freedom Flight FAB Club For Kids www.freedomflight911.com/kids.html

The immediate goal is to send this message to each and every American, and the world over so that we can raise awareness and mobilize. "We recognize that our newly elected President of the United States will need us 'THE PEOPLE' to get our country balanced again." says Deepa.

Halloween Flashback - Michael Jackson Captain Eo

This movie was the centerpiece of a 3D attraction at Disneyland in the 80's. It looks dated "boots" (that means really dated for those fo you who don't speak ghomo...lol). Because it was in 3D originally you'll notice sometimes stuff just sits there front and center and you may wonder why, but it was a 3D effect in the special theater.

Also, as a special added bonus for the 3 people in the whole world who haven't seen it yet I dropped in the video of the inmates in some Asian prison performing the Thriller routine. It is hysterical.

Video flashback - Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club

When I am painting the are 3 basic playlists I listen to. One is current hip hop and r&b, the second is this really moody mix of Sade, MeShell Ndegeocello, Duffy and stuff like that. My favorite playlist is my 80's joint complete with Prince, David Bowie, Madonna, British New Wave and the flashback video artist for today...Talking Heads.

This was one of my favorite bands in the 80's. They were clever, quirky, funky and unique. They were Talking Heads. They were so hot that the lead singer (David Byrne) went solo (no surprise) and had a successful career. What was a surprise is that another member Tina Weymoth also did her own thing and she created the classic club jam Genius of Love. Enjoy them both and enjoy the rest of this cold fall day.

Here's your pop for the day.

Janet takes us back...all the way back

JANET CONCERT SPOILER ALERT (don't read this is you don't want to know anything about the set list on the Janet Rock Wit Chu Tour

We all have things we've done that felt good at the time, but in hindsight may not have been such a "good look." For instance I grew up in LA in the 70's and 80's and I had a jheri curl. There I SAID IT OUT LOUD! LOL

Janet Jackson has had an incredible career, but like the rest of us she had to start somewhere and not everything she has done has been iconic. I happen to think that most of it has been pretty darn good including the stuff she used to ignore, namely her first two albums "Janet Jackson" and "Dream Street."

If you are under 25 years old like many of her fans are you'd never know those two albums existed unless you diligently searched for them yourself. That's all over now though as the clip below shows, Janet has decided to acknowledge those releases by performing a medley of songs from the early days.

DO NOT WATCH THE CLIP IS YOU DON' T WANT IT "SPOILED" FOR YOU.
