What do you get when you take production from Pharrell Williams and Jermaine Dupri then you mix it with a legendary industry executive like L.A. Reid? It gives birth to a supernova-star known as Leah Labelle (no relation of course to the original LaBelle).
Leah got her start on American Idol season 3 and also on YouTube singing cover after cover of her favorite songs. Then, out of the blue, she was contacted via twitter by Pharrell and JD who believed so much in her talent that they introduced her to L.A. Reid and agreed to split production duties on her debut album due later this year. Watch the music video, “Sexify”, her debut single with the 90s-throwback sound.
Last night, I went to check out her showcase at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in lower Manhattan, where she performed some of her material as well as a stellar cover of Vanity 6′s “Nasty Girl”, and she delivered on all levels!
She’s the full package without a doubt. The right voice, the right look, the right amount of sex appeal, the right stage presence, the right songs, the right producers, the right label…now all she needs is the right audience to pay attention, which is beyond half the battle. With endless comparisons to Alicia Keys, Leah Labelle has our support here at UPL! Also, check out one of my personal favorites, “So Hot”…enjoy!
